Lakers Enter Doncic Era: GM Pelinka Reveals “3 Goals” Achieved This Summer

Reporter Du Yijun / Comprehensive Report

The “Purple and Gold” Los Angeles Lakers experienced seismic changes this summer! With the departure of star LeBron James to the Philadelphia 76ers, the Lakers have officially entered the “Luka Doncic era.” Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka, in a press conference today, publicly discussed the team’s offseason strategy for the first time, emphasizing that the team has successfully completed the three major goals set for this summer and expressed confidence in the new roster built around Doncic.

The Lakers were active in free agency and trades this summer, with the top priority being to retain popular local guard Austin Reaves with the “largest contract in history for an undrafted player.” Subsequently, they added centers Walker Kessler and Sandro Mamukelashvili, along with perimeter sharpshooter Quentin Grimes and guard Collin Sexton, as immediate contributors.

Regarding the offseason reinforcements, Pelinka stated clearly in the press conference that the team had fully achieved its three major goals: successfully retaining core guard Reaves, signing a defensive center with foundational potential, and acquiring players that fit the system of new head coach JJ Redick.

Pelinka emphasized, “These new members possess the all-around traits of passing, shooting, and playmaking. They not only bring youth but also significantly increase roster depth. This is exactly the tactical puzzle pieces Coach Redick envisioned.”

Although the Lakers sacrificed multiple future assets and handed out several long-term contracts to assemble this roster, raising questions about future flexibility, Pelinka took a firm stance, stressing the team’s determination to build around Doncic and believing this lineup has the competitiveness to contend for a championship.

Regarding the departure of James, who spent many years with the Lakers and led them to the franchise’s 17th championship, Pelinka described it as “the result of amicable negotiations.” He said emotionally, “For this historic, legendary superstar, the entire Lakers organization is always full of gratitude. The two sides chose to part ways with mutual consensus.”
